El Año en Riffs

La revista Wire dedica en su rewind del 2008 una página al riff, figura rítmica usada y amada por todos, o como ellos lo ponen, "para algunos el principio organizador del universo, para otros una herramienta para destruir realidades defectivas." Mejor dicho imposible.

En su recorrido revisan como le fue al riff en los diferentes estilos que lo emplean. De notable consideración:

• "... records which have witnessed purveyors of inchoate noise abandoning their former amorphousness in favour of more or less rigidly defined form, imposing order upon their sound..", refiriéndose a grupos indie/alternativos como Magik Markers, MV & EE y todos aquellos apadrinados por Thurston Moore de Sonic Youth*,
• "... certainly made off with the syphilitic Richards-riffage and love of cheap downtown dirt, and there's a dose of Jesus and Mary Chain in there somewhere, further blurring an already opiated brew, but this only makes the musty aroma of record collection rock all the more pungent**", refiriéndose a grupos más estilizados como Sic Alps o Times New Viking,
• "... an aesthetic strain which almost negates the riff entirely, the musical equivalent of colouring outside the lines as washes of trebly noise corrode the formal structure of the songs...", refiriéndose al black metal***,
• "... Sweden's Meshuggah have distinguished themselves as scientists of the form, cranking up the rigidity and complexity to suffocating point", refiríendose a su disco "obZen"****,
• "... riffs appear to be dissolving as they are played, the monolithic giving way to the raptorous, the edges deliriously blurred", refiriéndose a Sunn O)))***** y Nadja con su doom metal y
• "... while the riff belongs to everyone, it's perhaps safest in the hands of disheveled, hirsute males un plaid shirts******", refiriéndose a los más recientes discos de Melvins, Asva, Earth y Harvey Milk.
  

*Difícilmente podría encontrar a alguien más ocupado que Moore, dividiendo su tiempo entre grabando y tocando con Sonic Youth, escribiendo, participando con otros grupos y administrando una disquera.
**Concuerdo totalmente que esas cosas apestan. No "apestan" en el sentido de que sea malo, sino de que es muy notorio lo que están haciendo. Sería interesante determinar si lo hacen para revivir o volver a popularizar ciertos estilos o si de plano quieren posicionar sus grabaciones entre las de los grandes.
***Si alguien no está totalmente de acuerdo con que el black metal sea considerado como una forma artística más elevada, al menos puede entender su popularidad como consecuencia de la obsesión gringa con la tortura (Abu Ghraib, la serie de "Saw", etc) y todo lo que se considere oculto.
****De lo más exquisito del 2008. Una verdadera monstruosidad.
*****Creo que viene Sunn O))) al festival Radar en el DF por ahí del 14 de marzo. Ahí estaré.
******Suena medio sexista, pero la verdad es que todos los guitarristas de esos grupos llevan muchos años sacando riffs, aun y cuando fuese terriblemente impopular hacerlo. A estas alturas ya son los más finos artesanos del riff.

Me dio mucho gusto saber que el riff, oficialmente consagrado con el primer disco de Black Sabbath en los 70's, tenga tantos sabores y colores en la actualidad. Y tomando prestado lo que dijo Rob Neyer******* sobre la madurez intelectual, no voy a adivinar lo que mañana vayan a pensar hacer estos artistas o lo que vaya a pensar el público en general sobre el riff. Solo queda admirar lo producido y esperar más satisfacción a futuro.
